Research
At the History of Parliament my main area of specialization has been Lancashire and the influence of the duchy of Lancaster.

My research interests generally encompass Elizabethan and Jacobean political culture, especially debates and discourses on various areas of economic legislation. I am now working on a book about monopolies in early modern England, a project which has grown out of my doctoral thesis (Oxford, 2001).

Publications
‘The electoral patronage of the duchy of Lancaster, 1604-28’, Parliamentary History, 26 (2007).
‘Thomas Gerrard’, History Today (Aug. 2004).
‘Richard Robinson’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004).
‘Piscatorial politics revisited: the language of economic debate and the evolution of fishing policy in Elizabethan England’, Albion, 35 (2003).
