Research
My work at the History of Parliament consists of
trawling through manuscript collections for the section on the House of Lords. I have completed work on the Danby Papers (held in the B.L.), the Tanner Mss (held on microfilm in the I.H.R.), the Verney Papers (held on microfilm in the B.L.), and I am engaged currently on the Portland Papers (held in the B.L.).

My main research interest is in the political history of Britain 1660-1760.

Publications
I was associate editor of The House of Commons
1690-1715 (2002), and wrote approximately 250 articles for the Oxford D.N.B. The main findings of my thesis, on the interaction of local and central affairs in Lancashire, can be found in 2 articles in Parliamentary History, `Local Legislative Initiatives for Economic and Social Development in Lancashire, 1689-1731’ (1990) & `Provincial Influence on General Legislation: The Case of Lancashire, 1689-1731’ (1997).
