Biography

In January 1403, when Brantham was living in St. John’s parish in Dunwich, he contributed 2d. to the first half of the subsidy granted in the Parliament of 1402. As under bailiff he was responsible for the collection of the fee farm and other rents, and it was during his term of office that he was returned to Parliament for the first time. He was concerned in a dispute about his trade as a brewer, brought before the borough court in 1411; and in May 1422 he was fined there for having a dungheap in the road. He may have been dead by September 1427, when William Barber II* was holding the messuage once belonging to him.3
