Biography

In the year of his first Parliament Brice found employment not only by the Crown, as controller of customs at Melcombe (conditional on his writing the accounts personally), but also from Roger Mortimer, 4th earl of March, as ‘messor’ (overseer of the harvest) on his estates at Wyke. He also later served the earl as bailiff of the liberty of Wyke, Weymouth and Portland. He owned a house on the quay at Weymouth, witnessed deeds there on several occasions, and was one of the local delegation sent to the shire court at Dorchester to report the parliamentary election results of 1410, 1414 (Apr.), 1417, 1421 (May), 1422 and 1425.3 Although Brice resided at Weymouth, he acquired by marriage a house in West Street, Bridport, which, in 1440, his widow, Joan, and his son, Nicholas, sold to William Oliver†.4
