Biography

When, at Lewes, Chepelond paid 8d. to the poll tax of 1379, he was described as a butcher, although in fact he traded in a wide variety of commodities. In the years 1388 to 1390 he is recorded as making shipments from Seaford of mead, candles, peas, oats, butter, wine and cloth, as well as the salted beef and bacon of his principal trade. It is uncertain whether the pardon he took out in June 1398 was related to suits for debts incurred in the course of his trading activities or rather to the political circumstances of the time.1

Chepelond witnessed a number of deeds regarding property in Lewes. His own holdings included a meadow and garden on the banks of the stream near the Watergate, which he and his wife acquired in 1408.2
