Biography

As a tenant of the bishop of Winchester, Croke held two messuages in North Street, Taunton, which he had purchased from Joan, widow of John Northmore*. In August 1420 he acted as a witness to a conveyance of property in Bridgwater to Thomas Knolles*, the London grocer, and John Marchaunt II*, his fellow burgess of Taunton. He was serving as portreeve in the borough when elected to Parliament for the second time, later that same year. Croke had been one of those sent to the shire court at Ilchester to witness Taunton’s election to the Parliament of 1417, and was to be similarly delegated with respect to the assemblies of May and December 1421, 1422, I425 and 1426.2
