Biography

Like the prominent lawyer Robert Darcy*, who also sat for Maldon, Galon came from Northumberland, where his family was widespread and important.1 He was always closely associated with Darcy, and may also have been a man of law, perhaps being the ‘Galion’ admitted to Lincoln’s Inn some time before 1420. In the summer of 1407 he acted as a feoffee of Darcy’s in 40 messuages and other property in Maldon and a house in Cambridge, and he probably settled in Maldon at about the same time, although it was as ‘of Northumberland’ that in October 1414 he stood surety in the Exchequer for Robert Whelpington* of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Described as ‘gentleman of Essex’ he provided securities for Darcy in 1427, and a year later he served as his friend’s co-feoffee in the manor of Canewdon, Essex, apparently acting for Joan, Lady Beauchamp of Abergavenny. In 1431 Galon was a trustee of two messuages in Maldon.2
