Biography

When assessed at 20d. for the poll tax of 1379, as living in Lewes, atte Gate was described as a cloth merchant, and it was as ‘draper’ that he was returned to the second Parliament of 1388. Meanwhile, in 1381, he had completed the purchase of a messuage in Lewes from William Nythecome and his wife.1
