Biography

In 1381 Laurence Glover of London was pardoned his outlawry for not appearing to answer John Glover of Maldon before the King’s bench after taking a servant from the latter’s employment at Maldon without leave. A merchant, John traded in cloth (being assessed for alnage on 12 ‘dozens’ sold in Maldon in 1394-5), and sometimes brought pleas of debt against burgesses of Colchester, such as John Pod*, the dyer. He rented a stall on the quayside at Maldon. Elected bailiff no fewer than nine times, he also acted as an overseer of repairs to Hey bridge in 1389 and was among the townsmen named in the charter of privileges granted to Maldon by the bishop of London in 1403. Glover witnessed deeds of property in the town, and occasionally served as a feoffee for his fellows, notably for John Burgess*.2 He appeared as a main-pernor at the local parliamentary elections held in 1388 (Sept.), 1411, 1413 (May) and 1417, acting respectively for John Crakebon, John Burgess, Richard Galon and Thomas Paffe.3

Glover’s son John appears in the borough records from 1414, but it was probably the father who was elected keeper of the keys of the common chest in January 1416; and he was still alive at Easter 1418, after the termination of his ninth bailiffship. He died before May 1421, when John junior conveyed all his property in Maldon to Robert Darcy*.4
