Biography

Hardy is first mentioned in 1384, as providing securities for the attendance of Adam Daubeney* at the second Parliament of that year. Thereafter, nothing more (apart from elections to Parliament) is known about him until July 1403, when one Ralph Wyndhull granted him property in Wilton which was to be held jointly with William Chitterne*, John Bottenham* and other fellow burgesses. Hardy’s companion in the Commons of 1406 was Robert Frye II, the clerk of the royal council, and when the latter was re-elected in 1407 he stood surety for his attendance. He was present at the shire elections of 1411 and at both those of 1414.2

By 1410 Hardy was renting a sizeable house, for 6s.8d. a year, from the commonalty of Wilton; and in April 1415 he was possessed of lands and tenements in the borough, these being held jointly with John Harleston*, John Whithorne* and John Lambarde*. He is not recorded after 1416.3
