Biography

Hipperon was already practising as a lawyer by February 1414, when he represented the abbot of Battle, Sussex, at an assize of novel disseisin arraigned against Sir Reynold Cobham at Guildford. It was probably as one of the feoffees of John Solas of Guildford that he himself brought a similar action against Adam Seintmersh of Shoreham, Kent, at the same sessions. In the following September he appeared once more before the same justices on behalf of George Garvis, a grocer of London; but he does not seem to have had much to do with litigation at a local level after this date. Hipperon was also a trustee of John Gybbe of Crowhurst, Surrey, and as such, in April 1423, made a quitclaim of all the latter’s holdings there to John Gaynesford^†, an influential Surrey landowner. Over a year later, in July 1424, he was a witness to the property transactions of Richard Eton* in Pirbright, Surrey. He may have retired from public life in 1427, the date of his replacement as clerk of the peace for Surrey after nine years in office, but he returned briefly in February 1431 as a royal commissioner. He was still alive in, or shortly before, June 1440, when John Bellyrby, a hosier from York, was pardoned his outlawry for not answering a plea for trespass brought by Hipperon and his wife in Middlesex.3
