Biography

Hore was admitted to the freedom of Wells before 1379. Between then and 1393 he provided pledges for five other new burgesses, and he was always much involved in the town’s affairs, most notably during his four terms as master. In December 1383 he travelled to Bristol on official business, and he served regularly on the master’s council. However, although asked by another former master, Thomas Tanner*, to be an executor of his will, when required to act in 1401 he refused to accept the responsibility.3

Hore was engaged in the local manufacture of cloth, being assessed for alnage on as many as 214 ‘dozens’ sold in Somerset between 1395 and 1397, and on 65 broad cloths in 1402-3. Little is known about his property in Wells, save that from 1389 he and his wife owned a tenement with three shops in the High Street, acquired from Maud Remyngton. When master of Wells in the autumn of 1394, Hore was the official recipient of a grant made to the commonalty by Nicholas Cristesham* for the relief of charges incumbent on the town, and in March 1406 he himself, in association with Richard Groos* and John Horewode I*, obtained a royal licence to donate four messuages and four shops for the same purpose.4 Hore died before September that year, having named as his executors his widow and Luke Fisher.5
