Biography

Little is known about the subject of this biography, who first appears in August 1396, when, as ‘John, son of Robert Hutton’, he witnessed a deed at Preston Patrick in Westmorland. His estates comprised the two neighbouring manors of Greystoke and Hutton Roof, which he held as a feudal tenant of Ralph, Lord Greystoke, and which had previously (up to 1387) been in the hands of his grandfather, Robert Hutton. Since he lived so near to the border between Cumberland and Westmorland it is perhaps not surprising that the electors of the latter county decided to send him to the first Parliament of Henry V’s reign, although he was completely lacking in administrative experience, and played little part in the affairs of the local community. Hutton died in, or shortly before, October 1417, leaving a young son named Henry, who became a royal ward. One month later Roland Thornburgh* obtained custody of the boy’s estates, together with rights of wardship and marriage.2
