Biography

Richard followed his father’s profession, and in Henry IV’s reign is found acting as an attorney at the Exeter assizes. In 1412, two years after his only return to Parliament for Exeter (which surely may be attributed in part to Thomas’s influence as recorder of the city), he received a ‘pension’ of £2 from the citizens, and along with his father he was entertained at a dinner given in the mayor’s house.1 Also in 1412, he appeared in Chancery as mainpernor for two Cornishmen who were defendants in a suit concerning property in Penryn. He himself purchased land in Cornwall, and also acquired holdings elsewhere, for some time before 1417 he petitioned the chancellor, Bishop Beaufort of Winchester, for assistance when tenants at ‘Northbere’ refused to acknowledge his rights of lordship. Meanwhile, in May 1413, he had stood proxy for the incumbent of Rackenford rectory, Robert Cruwys, at the time of his presentation to the benefice, and in the same year William Wilford* of Exeter, who had married a widow of one of the Cruwys family, bequeathed £5 to him. In 1412 and 1417 he was party to conveyances enrolled in the court of common pleas concerning a rental charge on manors held by Elizabeth, widow of Sir John Prideaux*.2 Richard probably died before June 1418, for he was not mentioned in his father’s will.
