Biography

Robert is first heard of in 1408, when he and John Grene, the cantarist of St. Mary’s church, Calne, and prior of the town’s hospital, obtained a grant in survivorship of premises called ‘Pynesplace’. Yet as a parishioner of Calne, he was among those who criticized Grene’s conduct in his official duties at the visitation made by the dean of Salisbury in May 1409. Apart from his election to Parliament on three successive occasions at the beginning of Henry V’s reign, nothing more is recorded about him until May 1427 when, with other burgesses of Calne and Devizes, he witnessed a conveyance of property in those towns to Robert Long* and others. Later that year he again sat in the Commons. Then, in 1428, he appeared as a juror at an inquest held in order to assess the contribution the hundred of Calne was to make to a parliamentary levy. Roude stood surety for the attendance of Robert Cricklade as one of Calne’s representatives at the Parliament of 1437. He was still alive in July 1446, being one of those for whose welfare prayers were continually to be made in a chantry founded in his home town.
