Biography

Under the terms of his father’s will, made in 1348, Rous inherited a cottage and a curtilage in Paynestwychene Lane, Bath, together with a brass pot and a bed, though all his father’s tools, including tongs, a good anvil, shears and hammers, passed to his brother John. Presumably still a child when his father died, he must have come of age long before 1378, when he conveyed the cottage and curtilage to John Comp. In the following year he was living in Broad Street and paid 6d.poll tax. He was then described as a ‘craftsman’.3
