Biography

Salisbury came from a prominent Leominster family, whose members had represented the borough in over 20 Parliaments between 1332 and 1384. They held property in the town, and were frequently required to witness local conveyances. An earlier John Salisbury attended the parliamentary elections at Leominster in 1382, 1383, 1384 and 1388, on each occasion finding mainprise for the appearance of the burgesses chosen.1

In November 1403 our John served on a jury at Leominster, giving evidence about property confiscated from Richard Foncell, an adherent of Owen Glendower. From 1410 to 1413 he provided an annual maintenance grant of seven marks for one John Stanton, until the latter was ordained priest. Having himself represented his home town in four previous Parliaments, he was among the dozen or so burgesses named as present at the elections held there in 1420, December 1421, 1423, 1425, 1426, 1427, 1429 and 1431. In 1434 he was included in the list of Herefordshire gentry certified in Chancery as liable to take the general oath not to support those who broke the peace, after which nothing more is heard of him.2
