Biography

At the time of his one and only known return to Parliament in 1395, William was still known as ‘the younger’, and had yet to inherit the scattered estates which came to him, in 1399, some three years after the death of his distant relative, Robert Halton. He and Halton were both descended from Sir Hugh Stafley, William being the grandson and heir of Thomas Smardale, who was himself Stafley’s grandson. Halton had died without issue in April 1396, leaving a number of small properties in Ousby and Culgaith, Cumberland, and Smardale, Waitby, Kirkby Stephen, Kirkby Thore and Crosby Gerard, Westmorland. There were evidently some problems in identifying the next heir, because the necessary inquisitions were not held until 1398, and it was only in November 1399 that Savage obtained custody of all the land in question. He was still alive in 1401, when William Crackenthorpe I*, who was one of his feudal tenants, secured a royal pardon for settling land in Ousby upon his own son, William II*.1
