Biography

When assessed at Derby for the 1379 poll tax at the high rate of 12d., Shore was described as a ‘peyntor’; although later in his career he became involved in the manufacture of cloth. Following the Derbyshire uprising of June 1381 he was accused of harbouring the sons of Ralph Stathum after they had murdered an old enemy, but was eventually acquitted. At the Derby assizes of 1382 he appeared on behalf of William Shore (perhaps his father) in a plea of novel disseisin, and two years later he went surety before the same court for Robert Bolton*. He was present at Derby in April 1387 when William Groos* offered his ward the marriage of Joyce, daughter of William Pakeman*. In the summer of 1393, before the King’s bench sitting at Derby, Sherman provided securities for the queen’s bailiff of the liberty of Derbyshire, John Stokkes*, but on the same occasion he was himself indicted, in association with Stokkes and Richard Sherman*, for two separate offences, namely, breach of the peace and a forcible eviction. He evidently escaped serious penalty.2 On 17 Oct. 1411, when bailiff of Derby for his fourth and last term, Shore attached the borough seal to the parliamentary election indenture in which he himself was named as one of the town’s representatives. He went on to witness a conveyance in Derby in 1413, and in March the following year was distrained, but not empanelled, for service as a juror at the local inquiries into lollardy. He is last heard of in 1419 when, at the parliamentary elections, he acted as surety for John Sparham and Ralph Shore.3 The latter may well have been his son.
