Biography

In what way Edward was connected with the Stikelanes of Bridport and Lyme is uncertain, for he does not appear in the local records. His landed interests apparently lay elsewhere in Dorset: in 1392 he joined William Batecombe in a grant, for the maintenance of the Benedictines at Cerne, of property worth more than £10 p.a. in Frome St. Quintin and Milborne St. Andrew, and in February 1399 he was associated with the abbot of Cerne, when together they were charged at the Dorchester assizes with illegal disseisin of other premises at Milborne. In 1427, as ‘of Watteford’ (perhaps Whitford, near Lyme), he stood surety at the quarter sessions held at Wimborne on behalf of Thomas Stikelane* of Lyme, probably a kinsman of his. He was then described as a ‘gentleman’.
