Biography

Despite his eight returns to Parliament for Malmesbury, seven of them between 1382 and 1386, curiously little is known about Weston. He was, however, described as mercator when, in 1379, he was assessed at 2s. towards the borough’s contribution to the poll tax of that year. This was the second largest sum then paid by any Malmesbury burgess. In October 1383, when he was elected to Parliament for the fifth time, John Stowell* stood surety for his attendance. On Christmas Eve 1384, the last day of the second Parliament of the year, he and his fellow Member for Malmesbury, John Pusey, were added to a commission (set up a week earlier) to collect, in Wiltshire, the subsidy voted during the session.2
