Biography

It may have been this John Wilton who, before April 1393, was appointed by the sheriff of Herefordshire to summon David Mab Yeribid, chaplain, to appear in Chancery in connexion with a suit then pending over the right to present to Cellan church. In June 1411 he purchased a messuage, 26 acres of arable land, three acres of meadow and a toft in Monnington on Wye, upstream from Hereford, and four years later he filed a plaint of trespass in the court of King’s bench against certain local husbandmen. Nevertheless, he usually resided in the city. Following his first return to Parliament in the spring of 1414, he attended the elections held in the guildhall in the autumn, and it was as ‘of Hereford’ that he was appointed to collect subsidies in the shire two years later.
