Biography

At the assizes held at Lewes in June 1422 Woghere and his wife brought a plea of novel disseisin against John Mason* and William Haselden, but no details about the suit survive. During the 1420s, across the border in Surrey, he was a tenant of land at Lingfield (for which he paid an annual rent of 4s.8d. to Agnes, widow of John Hathersham II*), and his subsequent designation as ‘husbandman’ suggests that he made a living principally from farming. Early in 1434 Woghere took out a royal pardon of outlawry in Middlesex following his failure to answer a plea for a debt of £3 brought by John Nelond esquire, who had an estate in East Grinstead and Lingfield by virtue of his marriage to Thomas St. Cler’s* widow.1
