Biography

Thomas Andrew was a tailor and a merchant adventurer of Exeter who after his admission as a freeman during 1478/79 lived in Northgate Street. His Membership of Henry VIII’s first Parliament was an extension of his civic career and at the election held on 9 Jan. 1510 he polled 16 votes, one less than his fellow-Member John Orenge over whom he nevertheless took precedence as an ex-mayor. Nothing is known about his part in the House and he had to wait until late in 1512 for payment. He was replaced by William Hurst as a member of the Twenty-Four on 6 Mar. 1517. By his will made on 27 Apr. following he asked to be buried in St. Mary Arches, Exeter, and left his son Thomas £8 a year to sing for his soul until Thomas received a benefice. After providing for his wife, children, apprentices and servants he remembered the feoffees of his lands held in fee simple and left the residue to his executors his sons Humphrey and Richard, and his sons-in-law John Blackaller and Henry Hamlin. Andrew died on the following 9 May and his will was proved before the end of the month, but a codicil establishing a chantry and a charity was accidently overlooked and the omission was not made good until 13 Dec. 1529 when Blackaller and Hamlin were attending the Parliament summoned that year.4
