Although the name of the first knight for Oxfordshire in 1542, Sir John Williams, is known from both the indenture and the dorse of the writ, the former is torn where the second name should have been and the latter is so damaged that only ‘Eds ... ar.’ is legible. Kipling correctly extended the Member’s abbreviated christian name and it was so printed in the Official Return. Without giving his authority Browne Willis published the name as ‘Edward Br[idges], Esq.’. Following this lead Williams and Davenport have suggested that the Member was a younger son of Sir Giles Brydges of Coberley, Gloucestershire, and thus a brother of Sir John and Thomas†, but there is no evidence that Sir Giles had a son Edward.
