Biography

William Barne of Harlton has been identified as the Member for Preston in preference to several namesakes because of his local and Middle Temple connexions with George Frevile.3

Little has been discovered about Barne. He was probably a comparatively young man at his death on 17 Jan. 1562, for his elder son Thomas was then only 13. By his will, made a few days previously, he left part of his Cambridgeshire lands to his second son, Robert, and instructed his executors to sell property in Essex and Hertfordshire. To his wife he bequeathed two thirds of his manor of Harlton for life. An unborn child was, if a boy, to share Robert’s land; if a girl, to have £200. To his two sons he left all the plate and household stuff bequeathed to them by their grandmother, Alice Golde. The executors were the widow, Barne’s elder son Thomas and a relative by marriage, Francis Wyse. The will was proved on 31 Jan. 1562.4
