Biography

George Fettiplace was still a boy when his father died. After studying at Oxford, where he was a pupil of John Jewell, he followed his stepfather Thomas Denton and his uncle Edmund Mordaunt to the Middle Temple; Mordaunt was his pledge on admission to clerks’ commons in July 1552.3

Fettiplace probably owed his two elections for Buckingham, while still a young and untried man, to his mother’s family: his uncle Sir John Mordaunt was a Privy Councillor and knight of the shire for Bedfordshire in the first four Parliaments of the reign and his stepfather Denton sat for Buckinghamshire in that of November 1554. Unlike Denton, Fettiplace was in the House when it was called early in January 1555. He was not to sit again but his later life was one of steady advancement in his profession.4

Fettiplace died on 31 July 1577 of gaol fever contracted at the Black Assizes at Oxford, having survived long enough to have made his will three days before. He left most of the lands that he had acquired in Gloucestershire and elsewhere to his wife for life, with remainder to his eldest son John, then 16. He named his wife executrix and his brothers-in-law John Higford and Edward Poole, his mother and his cousin William Poole overseers.5
