Biography

Robert Haselrigge’s origin and parentage have not been established. There is nothing to show that he came of the Leicestershire family of that name, to which belonged the namesake whose career in the royal household can be traced for upward of 30 years until his death in 1534. Haselrigge’s own career at Nottingham lasted even longer. To judge from his presentment in 1547 for selling it at an excessive price he dealt in wine, and the house in High Pavement called the Falcon, on which in 1531 he was paying a rent of 6d. to the chamber of the town, may have included a tavern; as mayor in 1539 he joined the two chamberlains in granting to a local mercer a lease of a shop and tavern at 8d. a year. In 1524 he was assessed for the subsidy, of which he had himself been appointed a commissioner, at 50s. in goods at High Pavement.3

Haselrigge might have sat in more than one Parliament but for the prevalence of nominees among the Nottingham Members in his day. It was he who during a mission to London in 1540 to buy equipment for the town militia also paid 12d. on the town’s behalf for a ‘book of the Acts of Parliament’. His own brief Membership came towards the close of his life, for after going on to complete a fourth mayoralty in the following year he did not survive the fifth to which he was straightway elected. If he made a will it has not been found.4
