Biography

In 1544 Lawrence Hawes was a churchwarden of Great St. Mary’s Cambridge, where John Hawes had been buried in 1527. Nothing is known of the education which had qualified him for the town clerkship and his offices in the Isle of Ely but he may have preceded his son John at Gray’s Inn. He presumably owed his election to Mary’s fourth Parliament to his being town clerk. He made his will on 2 July 1556, being then resident in St. Edward’s parish, Cambridge. He left his wife a life-interest in the two houses ‘that I now dwell in’ and provided for his three sons. He named his wife and his ‘brother’ Robert Payne executors. The date of probate is unknown, but Hawes was dead by August 1557 when the town clerk was Edward Ball. He was briefly succeeded in his other offices by his young son John at the appointment of Bishop Thirlby.3
