Biography

John Hering may have been born in either Herefordshire or Lincolnshire where various Hering families can be traced; he probably settled in Essex early in life, for Jane Norton, widow of Sir Richard Fitzlewis, appointed him in 1535 an executor of her will and remembered both him and his wife in it. He acquired property at Stisted, some 12 miles from Colchester, and it was presumably as a local gentleman that he procured his election for that borough to Mary’s fourth Parliament, although he may also have enjoyed the support of the two knights of the shire, Sir William Petre with whom he had served as a master in Chancery and Sir Robert Rochester whose home was not far from Stisted. Hering did not join the protest led by Sir Anthony Kingston against the government in this Parliament, and his loyalty may have prompted Rochester’s nephew, Sir Edward Waldegrave, to nominate him in 1558 for Lostwithiel, the town in Cornwall where the duchy administration was situated: Waldegrave had been appointed joint receiver-general of the duchy when Mary came to the throne and had retained an interest in the office after selling it to John Cosworth, Hering’s fellow-Member. It is not known when Hering died but with the consent of his widow the administration of his estate was granted to his brother Andrew on 22 May 1563.3
