Biography

John Isted was a shipowner who had property in Framfield and Hastings. He represented Hastings at Brotherhoods of the Cinque Ports on several occasions between 1545 and 1554, and it was during the same years that he served for the fort in three Parliaments: during the second of them he had leave of absence as a purveyor for the King.5

In 1544 Isted contributed £3 to the benevolence. When bailiff, he and three others, one of them Philip Chute, were ordered by the Privy Council to restore to Antonio Macuelo goods taken out of a Spanish ship by the captain of a ship which they owned. In May 1556 he carried a letter from Joseph Beverley and William Crispe, lieutenant of Dover castle, to Sir Thomas Cheyne, the lord warden, to tell him that they had been arrested by the lord chancellor’s sergeant after they had taken musters.6

In his will, made on 8 Jan. and proved on 9 Feb.1557, Isted left his house in Hastings to his wife for life with remainder to his son Barnard. His wife was also to have his lands in Hastings and Framfield, and ‘my three little fish shops set without the gate of Hastings’, until Barnard reached the age of 22. His other son Richard was to have two other houses, land and a new shop without the sea gate of Hastings. His wife was to be his executrix and John Franke of Fairlight, Sussex, one of his overseers. His descendants settled at Lewes.7
