Biography

Richard Lloyd was a great-nephew of Humphrey Lloyd. Little has come to light about him save that he lived at Marrington, which although near Montgomery was in the parish of Chirbury just over the Shropshire border. There he was a neighbour and tenant of Edward Herbert, lord of Chirbury, who from 1553 enjoyed a near-monopoly in the representation of Montgomeryshire and who must have been instrumental in Lloyd’s election to the two Parliaments of 1554: the sheriff who returned him on both occasions was his father-in-law. Both Edward Herbert and Lloyd were prosecuted in the King’s bench for having quitted the second of those Parliaments without leave, but Herbert alone was fined for this dereliction. Lloyd presumably had a satisfactory explanation for his absence.4

Lloyd died on 25 Oct. 1570. At his death he possessed the manor of Marrington, three cottages in Chirbury held of Herbert and 34 acres of land there described as formerly belonging to Herbert; with various other neighbouring properties these were valued at £27 10s. a year. The heir, Richard Lloyd, was said to be 20 years and 11 months old, but as his wardship and marriage were the subject of a grant of 9 Feb. 1572 it appears that this was an overstatement.5
