Biography

Robert Vaughan is not easily distinguished from his namesakes in the area and elsewhere, but there are grounds for identifying him with Robert Vaughan of Presteigne. The sheriff who returned him to both Parliaments of 1554 was John Bradshaw I, who had made Presteigne his second home after Ludlow, and the knights for Radnorshire on each occasion were linked by marriage with branches of the Vaughan family, the sheriffs son John Bradshaw II with the Vaughans of Clyro, Radnorshire, and John Knill with those of Hergest, Herefordshire. No connexion has been established between Vaughan and Robert Vaughan II, who was returned to the Parliament of November 1554 for Grampound.

Vaughan was assessed at Presteigne for the subsidy of 1545 on goods worth £6 and for that of 1558 on lands worth £2 a year. As a justice in Radnorshire he was to be accounted by the bishop of Hereford in 1564 ‘a poor man’ and only a lukewarm supporter of Protestantism. If it was he who was sheriff in 1562-3 his description as of Glasbury makes it likely that he was the son of William Vaughan of Glasbury, a commissioner for the assessment of the relief in Radnorshire under Edward VI. He was an executor of his brother Richard Vaughan’s will of 28 Sept. 1559, which included the bequest of a house in St. David Street, Presteigne, to his son William; he was also mentioned in the will of Lewis ap David of Old Radnor in connexion with a lease. The only litigation Vaughan is known to have been involved in was a chancery case of Mary’s reign, when he was defendant in a dispute over lands in Painscastle.3

There are glimpses of Vaughan’s further career until 1575, after which nothing has been found about him.
