Biography

Walwyn’s family was of marcher origin but his father settled in Buckinghamshire. The career traditionally pursued by his family was that of estate administration. Through his mother Walwyn was connected with the noble families of Parr and Vaux. Apart from his descent and marriages all that has been discovered about Walwyn relates to Aylesbury where following his mother’s death he took up a copyhold in 1541. Named the town’s first bailiff in its charter granted by Mary in January 1554 he returned its first two Members to Parliament several months later and was himself returned in the autumn. He was the only townsman to sit for Aylesbury in the century and his election with William Rice, a household officer with local affiliations, was presumably in compliance with the Queen’s call for residents. Neither Member was found to be absent without leave when the House was called early in January 1555. Walwyn is last glimpsed in August 1566 when he and a merchant let land and crops in Aylesbury for a term of six years.4
