Biography

William Watkin has not been identified. The suggestion that he was the son and heir of Lewis Watkins (q.v.) has little to commend it, for this bearer of the name appears to have been well under age at the time of the election concerned. A William Watkyn appears on the muster roll of Narberth, Pembrokeshire, in 1539 and another, or the same one, was reeve of nearby Templeton seven years later. Since Narberth lies not far from Pembroke either or both of these could have been the Watkyn William, burgess of Pembroke, who was assessed there for subsidy in 1544 on goods valued at £19. Somewhat further afield. the 3rd Earl of Worcester’s lordship of Pennard, in the Gower peninsula, had a reeve named William Watkin in 1551-2.
