Biography

At the age of 20, Barker inherited estates in Shropshire and Cheshire which had come into the family through a settlement made on his grandfather by Sir Rowland Hill, lord mayor of, London. Haughmond was only three miles from Shrewsbury and the family were well known in the town: Barker’s father was made a burgess in 1570, and his uncle Richard Barker represented the borough in Parliament on two occasions, the first being in 1584. Barker himself was ‘chosen burgess of the Parliament’ 16 Oct. 1601, ‘in the choice of whom was great ado’. He died 30 Mar. 1618 and was buried at Wroxeter, 12 days after his wife’s burial. According to the inscription on their monument ‘the said John Barker being in good perfect health at the decease of the said Margaret, fell ill the day following and deceased, leaving no issue behind’. His estates passed to his brother Walter.
