Biography

Bellingham’s mother had one eighth of the barony, castle and borough of Lewes and other lands and rents, all representing a portion of the rape of Lewes. George Goring I was her second husband. Though Bellingham was returned once for the borough, being described on the return as ‘Edward Bellingham, gentleman, of Lewes’ (which neatly distinguishes him from his elder half-brother, a j.p. and ex-sheriff of Sussex) he left no mark upon the records of the House of Commons, and did not sit again. By 1594 he was assessed for the subsidy at Putney, though his nuncupative will of 30 Mar. 1605 describes him as of Ovingdean. He died the next day. His son Edward proved the will 10 Apr. following. The inquisition was taken at Stratford Langthorne, Essex, and recites the details of Bellingham’s maternal inheritance.
