Biography

Bethell was a mercer, related to (probably brother of) Richard Bethell, mayor and MP for Winchester. The family claimed descent from Owain Gwynedd, and moved c.1520 from Flintshire to Hampshire in the service of the abbot of Hyde. Bethell died intestate, probably of the plague, by May 1564, administration being granted to his son Stephen 31 Oct. 1570.
