Biography
The identity of this Member has not been established. The George Elsden who sat for Reigate in 1558 has been identified as the man who was MP for Lyme Regis in 1572 on the strength of (1) a marriage connexion between the Howards and the Paulets, one of whom, Lord St. John, was high steward of Lyme Regis, and (2) George Elsden’s admiralty connexions. Both Reigate and Bletchingley were under the influence of the Howards of Effingham. There is a presumption, therefore, that the 1563 Bletchingley man was from the Elsden family of Lyme Regis and brought into Parliament by the Howards.
