Biography

Haselrigge probably owed his return for Haslemere to his brother-in-law, the eminent civilian, Bartholomew Clerke, whose servant he was. When his sister Eleanor, Clerke’s widow, died in 1594, she left him the custody of her son Francis, and one-third of the manor of Dunsford in Clapham, formerly the property of her first husband, Thomas Smith of Mitcham. Haselrigge was still living at Dunsford in 1597, but had apparently left by October 1601. During the last years of his life he lived in Leicester, where he bought a number of small properties, including the ‘swynes market’ and an inn, the Angel. There are also references to his purchase of two messuages in Bedford and three acres of land in Harrowden, Northamptonshire. He died 15 Aug. 1612. His will, proved in the following month, mentions these properties, a lease in Lenton, Nottinghamshire, and two London inns, the King’s Head in Sermon Lane and the Paul’s Head, which he leased from the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s. He still owned his Dunsford estate. The widow, who afterwards married Anthony Faunt, was to administer the property for the co-heiresses, their daughters Eleanor and Anne, both under four years of age.2
