Biography

This Member, a minor country gentleman, came of an old Warwickshire family with Gloucestershire connexions. In 1540 his father had bought from the Crown for £207 5s. the site and possessions of Henwood priory in the parish of Solihull, the last of whose prioresses was a Joan Higford. He was presumably returned to Parliament at Warwick in 1593 through his local family influence, and may have been the ‘Mr. Hackford’ who was appointed to a committee concerned with relief of the poor on 12 Mar. 1593. He made his will 23 Feb. 1603, asking to be buried without pomp in the aisle of Solihull church, near his father and first wife, beneath a gravestone inscribed in brass with the family’s arms and dates of death. The poorest householders of Solihull and Knowle were to receive 40s. Hugford referred to his houses at Henwood and Solihull, and mentioned his father-in-law Sir John Hugford, ‘to whom above all men I have been most beholding’. He appointed as executor his elder son John, who was 26 when his father died at Solihull on as Mar. 1602. Three daughters and a younger son are mentioned.2
