This MP has not been identified. He may have been one of the Lawrences of Trethillick in Padstow, who in the seventeenth century settled in Lauceston, but the pedigrees begin too late to provide information about any member of the family who might have been named Giles.1

A Giles Lawrence from Gloucestershire was admitted as discipulus to Corpus Christi, Oxford on 19 Aug. 1539, the same date as his friend John Jewell, whom he helped to flee England during Mary’s reign. Lawrence became BCL and fellow of All Souls in 1542 and was regius professor of Greek from 1548 to 1563, being described by Wood as ‘the light and ornament of this university’. There is no reason why he should not have been returned for Tregony in 1563, but there is no evidence that he was, and his appointment as archdeacon of Wiltshire in 1564 militates against the identification, but not conclusively so. Lawrence went on to become DCL in the late 1570s and archdeacon of St. Albans in 1581.2

The MP does not occur in the records of either the 1563 or 1566 session of Parliament.
