Biography

Under 18 Mar. 1581 the parliamentary diary of Thomas Cromwell states that John Leweston was returned in place of Charles Mathew who had been ‘made a minister’ and ‘should attend his cure’. Nothing else is known about Mathew, and the above identification is suggested only because of the standing of the Turberville family in Dorset. Nicholas Turberville served as sheriff of the county (1577-8), while another member of the family, James, was bishop of Exeter. One other (minor) Mathew family with Dorset connexions has been found, with no known member of it named Charles.
