Biography

Miller was related to John Wolley, the Latin secretary (after whom he named one of his sons); Richard Swayne, recorder of Poole; and Edward Yarde, the 2nd Earl of Bedford’s west country agent. It was presumably Swayne who arranged his return for Poole in 1601. Apart from a few land transactions, and records connected with the performance of his county offices, very little has been discovered about Miller in the Elizabethan period. He was fined 40s. by the Star Chamber for an irregularity committed when sheriff. He died between 30 Apr. and 24 Sept. 1624, aged 60, leaving bequests to his family, and appointing Thomas Freke and Swayne his executors.1
