Biography

As with the Thetford 1559 Member, there is an identity problem, and the identification of the 1586 man with Thomas Poley of Badley is no more than a reasonable inference from his family being well-established in Suffolk and related to Lord Wentworth, one of the leading magnates of East Anglia. If this identification is correct, it would make him the younger brother of Edmund Poley, the recorder of Thetford, who was himself returned for Clitheroe in 1586. Next to nothing is known of Thomas Poley of Badley. It appears from the will of Edmund Poley, made in June 1607, that Thomas left money in trust to his son and daughter. Edmund became their guardian and on his death, without direct male heirs, in 1613, his nephew and ward succeeded to the family estates.
