Biography

Poughmill may have belonged to the Cheshire family of Pownall, or his name may be derived from the Shropshire village of Sponhill. As well as property in Ludlow he owned lands at Uanwennry in Radnorshire. Much of his prosperity he owed to his wife, who brought him ‘money, goods and leases, a great substance’. The only reference found to him in the proceedings of his four Parliaments is to leave of absence ‘for his great affairs in the marches’, 22 Feb. 1563. He died in 1583. His will, dated 18 Jan., directed that he should be buried in Ludlow parish church ‘in such decent sort as to my calling cloth appertain’. His wife, executrix and sole legatee, was to provide for his bastard children.
