Offices Held

Salveyn, like his distant relation John, owed his return at Hedon to the Constable family. He was a minor country gentleman, although in a Chancery suit he brought in 1601 over his wife’s jointure he described himself as of the city of London. He was a cousin of George Birket (or Birkhead) the second of the Catholic arch priests. There is no evidence that Salveyn himself was a recusant, but his second wife was. When Salveyn made his will on 15 Oct. 1609, he noted that in consequence of her ‘being not obedient to the laws’ it was not possible for him to provide for her in the customary manner. He therefore desired his friends, during his son’s minority, to provide for her ‘in as good sort as she hath been maintained in my time’, and his son was to do the same when he came of age. He wished to be buried with other members of the family in St. Oswald’s, Durham. His daughter Mary was to receive £500, and his other children £400 each, sums which were to be raised from the rents of Thornton under Ryseborough. Although his eldest son John was a minor, Salveyn appointed him executor, while the supervisors were three local gentlemen, William Wycliffe of Wycliffe, Salveyn’s nephew Gerard Salveyn, and his brother-in-law Robert Collingwood.

Salveyn died 23 Feb. 1610, and was buried in St. Oswald’s as he had requested. His eldest son John was 13 years and 3 months old when the inquisition post mortem was taken in June 1611.
