Biography

Savage’s father was one of the principal gentlemen of Cheshire, seven times sheriff of the county, and three times mayor of Chester. His three daughters married Sir William Brereton, Thomas Langton and Sir Henry Bagnall. Little is known about Savage himself; possibly he was a lawyer. He married a niece of his stepmother Eleanor, widow of Sir Richard Pexall of Beaurepaire, Hampshire. Sir John Savage settled at Beaurepaire and intended that Edward should receive the Hampshire property which came to him as the inheritance of his second wife. Unfortunately its ownership was contested by Eleanor’s relations, and although Edward Savage grew up in possession of Beaurepaire, where he entertained the Queen in 1601, he appears to have lost it about 1613 or possibly after the death of his stepmother in 1618.

Savage was returned at Newton through his brother-in-law Thomas Langton, and at Stockbridge through his neighbour William, 3rd Lord Sandys. He made no mark on the records of the House of Commons. In 1598 he went to Ireland with his brother John to inquire into the estates of their late brother-in-law, Sir Henry Bagnall.

Savage died before 29 Nov. 1622, when administration of his property was granted to his son.
