Biography

Nothing has been discovered about the parentage and early life of this Member. Though he may have inherited some property, and certainly acquired Sedgeford and other manors through marriage, it is clear that he obtained the bulk of his considerable estates through his law practice. He acted as attorney for John Peyton I in 1584, and from about 1580 to 1585 he was general surveyor and solicitor to Sir William Heydon, one of Norfolk’s leading gentlemen: it is probable that he acted in similar capacities to members of the Lestrange family. Though Stubbe was on a number of commissions, together with Sir William Heydon, in the period 1558-90, he never attained the commission of the peace, in spite of his wealth and high connexions. His return for Castle Rising in 1589 was perhaps due to the influence of the Lestranges. By a number of settlements and by his will, made on 2 May 1617, Stubbe devised all his land to his two daughters, married respectively to Sir William Yelverton and Sir Hamon Lestrange, and to their children. He made bequests to kinsmen and servants and for the upkeep of almshouses at Sedgeford. He died 24 Nov. 1619.
