Biography

Byne’s ancestors had held the Rowdell estate since the reign of Henry VIII. They appear to have avoided involvement in the Civil War. Byne, the only member of the family to enter Parliament, no doubt owed his three returns for Bramber, three miles from his home, largely to his brother-in-law and neighbour, Henry Goring I. Though he was named to no committees and made no recorded speeches in the Convention, he was recommended as a militia officer after the Restoration, and probably supported the Court. There was a double return in 1661, but Byne’s own election was not in dispute. He again left no trace on the records of the first session of the Cavalier Parliament, and was buried at Washington on 31 Dec. 1661. His widow married Sir Francis Guybon.
